Insignificant Others at the Hardrock Cafe

Ok so a few weeks ago we went to the Hard Rock Cafe. Free drinks and music and an introductoin to Insignificant Others. Who could say no.

The transition to San Francisco can be brutal. OH WELL! You came and now it's time to conquer. That is basically the story of Jay Kuo’s latest version of his musical Insignificant Others. Insignificant Others follows the romantic idiosyncrasies of five friends - two gay men and three straight women - who move to San Francisco from Ohio seeking love and adventure.

As we were imbibing, Jay came up and snapped some photos of some of our group with some fierce women.

Women in Music event in Berkeley with the Pacific Center and activelyOUT

The Women's Music Event was FANTASTIC!!!!

If you missed it, Vicki Randle was great. Her songs warmed me, inspired, and brought me back to those times of heartbreak and allowed me to touch on dispare but also to realize how strong a person I am to have come out of some bad relationships scarred but now healed.

Vicki was down to earth singing in front of us. This is her on the right.

She also allowed me revel in the good times of yesterday and today. In her music I cherished my current love. It was fantastic and totally unexpected.

Men, women, singles, couples all showed up for a wonderful evening.

For all the others who were there, please post your comments!

In the Mix in October with activelyOUT

The October in the Mix was a slight departure from our usual, but it was fun. The Aids Memorial Grove co-sponsored the event at Kenneth Wingard store on market street.

The Aids Memorial Grove executive committee was on hand to tell us more about the Grove. They were able to get 10 new volunteers. Thanks to all who came out. And thanks to all of you who share your time.

Leslie Feinberg- an activelyOUT member's perspective

I asked one of our members, Jane N. to tell us about the Leslie Feinberg talk which took place at Stanford University

Many staff, professors, current students and alumni turned out to hear transgender activist Leslie Feinberg speak on Wednesday, October 3, at Stanford as part of the Feminist Studies 101 curriculum. The lecture hall was packed. Feinberg vividly recounted the Stonewall Rebellion and how the street youth and patrons of the bar heroically fought back against the police and locked the officers inside the bar. I knew what Stonewall was, but I never really understood how brutal and victorious the incident was for the LGBT people and street youth involved.

Feinberg used the Stonewall Rebellion as a platform to describe how the LGBT movement has been, and needs to be a part of other anti-oppression movements throughout the world. The stories and lectures were captivating, and I, like many others left the event feeling empowered and proud to be a part of the LGBT community and history.

Feinberg’s novel Stone Butch Blues, is a classic in the Queer women’s cannon. Stone Butch Blues is the compelling account of a gender queer person’s coming of age in a working class Butch and Femme community. Feinberg, is currently promoting zer newest book Drag King Dreams.

Presidential Discussion on LGBT issues in the East Bay with activelyOUT,

I want to thank everyone who came out for this event. We had over 250 East Bay LGBT people and allies come out to view and discuss the on the issues raised by the candidates.

It was a great time for us all to come together and watch a historic event: Presidential candidates specifically addressing LGBT Americans.

View a slide show of the event

All facets of our community came out to watch, listen, and learn about each candidate.

I want to specially thank Oakland Rainbow Chamber for spearheading the effort. Also thank you to our co-organizers, Sister's Steppin' in Pride, Pacific Center, NIA Collective, and Barbary Lane.

activelyOUT at San Francisco Pride

Pride was AWESOME!!!
Thanks to so many activelyOUT members for volunteering and coming out to support us.

Before and during the fair... it was non-stop madness...
Creating an activelyOUT community of LGBT professionals
is very important to so many.

San Francisco Pride Fair June 23 -24: Wow! what a busy weekend we had at the Pride Fair. We met people from all over the bay area, not to mention all over North America, who loved what we were doing. The booth was non stop traffic the entire weekend. We're exhausted! We had a huge turnout of volunteers who graciously gave up some of their time to help us out. They were AWESOME! We'll have more about them in the next few weeks.

Who signed up? You did. We had men and women from all over the bay area and country turn out to meet and greet.

"An organization ... that caters to the LGBT professional? GREAT! I am always asked to give to other organizations. It is good to hear that there is one that will give me something in return"- Tonya, new activelyOUT member

activelyOUT is made up of everyday LGBT professionals who give of themselves to do extraordinary things. Again, thanks for volunteering :)

Some more pride pictures:

Anyone in San Diego next month for Pride? Yes we are expanding to Southern Cal. Room/Board connections for your exhausted activelyOUT team would be greatly appreciated. If you can put us up, email us. events@activelyOUT.com

activelyOUT in the East Bay: East Bay Mixer

The gays invaded the Upton Bar on Telegraph in Oakland.

OMG... yes there are gay people in the East Bay! By all conservative estimates, there are over 45,000 gay people in Oakland according to the Gay and Lesbian Atlas. And a number of us activelyOUT members who live or work in the East Bay came out to mix and mingle.

There was a great mixed crowd present- older, younger, singles, some couples, and some women. I did like the energy.

Special thanks to East Bay Men's group for putting it all together. These mixers are on the first Friday of each month. So stay tuned and we will let you know what is going on.

So come be active be OUT with us next month!

When the Levees Broke with Spike Lee

Last week there was a showing of Spike Lee's "WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS" at the SF Moma.

It was the documentation of the effect Katrina had on the people of New Orleans and our government's response. If you haven't seen it, please do. It was funny, sickening. poignant, and sad. It also illustrated the resilience of people

Spike said a few words before the movie to us all (sorry for the blurry picture). Many people I happened to see it with were from New Orleans. Talking to people about their personal experiences of growing up, today's devastation, the ripping apart of families was hard to hear. But these are people I knew and listening to them brought the tragedy to life.

As we move closer to the '08 elections, I think we need to listen to more of these stories.

Special thanks to Jonathan P. Batiste Black Spectrum Project Manager for organizing this eye opening activity. and inviting activelyOUT.

Comedy night with activelyOUT: Hal Sparks- guy from Queer as Folk March 30

Ok so there were three comedians. Some random guy who was just buying time was up first. Can you say excruciating? Wow... it must be a gift to go up and be so not funny.

The next guy was much better. He was a black dude with some comic skillz (as the youngsters say).

And last was Hal. He was funny. His humor was very intelligent and he was a real natural on stage. Here is a really bad picture of Hal.... Sorry, it was taken with my camera phone.

activelyOUT , Intercollegiate Alumni, and Professional Mixer at the CA Academy of Sciences on 3/15

This guy was CRAZY!

It was a wild night at the California Academy of Sciences on Thursday March 15. How many other people touched the snakes and alligator? Was I the only one who had to stop by the bar to get some liquid courage? OK, I was only kidding about the liquid courage part, but the event was really fun! Thanks to the over 250 people who came out and we hope you had us much fun as we did!

Special thanks to the California Academy of Sciences for allowing us the use of the private room and to gay it up for the night (wink). Please visit their website to gain an ongoing membership.

Another round of thanks to Stanford, UC Berkeley, Golden Gate Business Association, TeamSF, the IVYs, and seven sister schools for sending out invites and being event hosts!

Wow- what a fun time!
