When the Levees Broke with Spike Lee
Last week there was a showing of Spike Lee's "WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS" at the SF Moma.
It was the documentation of the effect Katrina had on the people of New Orleans and our government's response. If you haven't seen it, please do. It was funny, sickening. poignant, and sad. It also illustrated the resilience of people
Spike said a few words before the movie to us all (sorry for the blurry picture). Many people I happened to see it with were from New Orleans. Talking to people about their personal experiences of growing up, today's devastation, the ripping apart of families was hard to hear. But these are people I knew and listening to them brought the tragedy to life.
As we move closer to the '08 elections, I think we need to listen to more of these stories.
Special thanks to Jonathan P. Batiste Black Spectrum Project Manager for organizing this eye opening activity. and inviting activelyOUT.
